ALTZUSTE LANDETXEA is a traditional three-storey Basque manor house that dates back to the mid-19th century, restored and modernised yet preserving its original structure. It is a great place for business meetings or for groups of friends, courses and talks, as well as for resting in a pleasant, relaxed setting. The house is for rental either as a whole or on a room-by-room basis.
The bedrooms are on the second floor. There is a total of 6 bedrooms, each one decorated and painted in a different manner. This gives them their own personality. So much so that each one has been given a particular name according to the views from its windows. Thus, the rooms are called Gorbeia, Lekanda, Balzola, Atxular, Saldropo and Kaiarte. Despite their differences, they are all decorated in a rustic style and offer a comfortable atmosphere. Out of the 6 rooms, 4 have a full ensuite bathroom and 2 share. The 6 double bedrooms, together with the 3 extra folding beds available, sleep a total of 15 guests. Cots available, if required.
The ground floor includes a glazed lounge-dining room for use exclusively by the guests, with two different areas: one for the dining room with tables and benches and another for the lounge with sofas, a fireplace, a television, a telephone and stereo equipment, as well as board games and a shelf containing extensive information on the area. This floor also houses the fully equipped kitchen (oven, microwave, washing machine and all household items). The house also has a great children´s play park. All of the rooms in the house, both bedrooms and the lounge and kitchen, are well heated.
ALTZUSTE LANDETXEA is in the area of Altzuste, which belongs to the municipality of Zeanuri in Biscay. Zeanuri is an ancestral town of the Arratia Valley, the home of the most important Biscay traditions where the most charming traditional flavour is mixed with modernity. Altzuste is a highland area that is home to 225 people and from where the Gorbeia Nature Reserve, Lekanda and the entire valley with the Arratia River running through it can be seen in all their splendour.
One of the essential characteristics of Altzuste is the fact that time has stood still here. It is a basically agricultural and stockbreeding area with small farms for family subsistence. A walk through the area enables you to see its two shrines (San Miguel and Santa Lucía), enter into wise, warm conversation with its inhabitants, enjoy the views or see how the flocks of sheep move around in search of new pastures.
Zeanuri is the third largest municipality in Biscay, as it covers most of Gorbeia Nature Reserve, home to Mount Gorbeia (1,468 m), the highest peak in the Basque Country and symbol of this region. One of the most deeply-rooted traditions in the region consists of climbing Gorbeia on New Year´s Eve. This takes place on the morning of the 31st and "climbing" means reaching the 15-metre high cross that, by papal order, was placed on the mountain in 1901 wth the pontifical intention of all high peaks having a cross on them as a sign of Christianity.
Other points of interest in the reserve include the Lekanda peak, the "eye" of Atxular, Itxina and the fields of Arraba, all on extremely beautiful, rugged landscape.
You do not have to climb mountains to enjoy the reserve. You can walk along simple routes suitable for children that lead to enchanted fairy woods, visit the Saldropo marsh with its incredible bio-diversity and enjoy wonderful walks along the Arratia River. You can visit Zeanuri´s 14 shrines or see the famous Zeanuri "caleras" (strange places where our predecessors made lime) or its old mill, now restored and running.
